Unfortunately whole word reading is only somehting those already proficient at reading are able to do. When it comes to learning to read, kids need to learn phonetically. However the egg-heads that brought you the jumbled letter research also determined that whole word reading might be a good way to teach kids to read and so we have a whole generation of illiterates; thanks, Cambridge University and others....
